If you prefer to explore a more rural
area, where better than the historic village of Laxton - the last
village in the country to practice strip farming and site of the
best preserved motte and bailey castle in Nottinghamshire and the
last 'Court Leet' in England and Wales which retains its
jurisdiction to determine legal proceedings. Laxton is 14 miles from
The Vicarage B&B. There is a
Visitor Centre
beside
The Dovecote Inn,
where the history and current practice in Laxton is explained and
guide leaflets may be obtained for walks through the Open Fields. If
you would like a more informative visit, you can have your own
free guided tour by
prior arrangement. A visit to Laxton can easily be combined with a visit to the nearby working windmill at Tuxford, where you can also enjoy a cup of tea with a delicious home made cake and buy some home milled flour to take home. You can phone them in advance on 01777 871202 to check if the mill is working that day.
