It
would be a pity to come to stay so close to the historic market town
of Newark on Trent without paying it a visit. Market day is
Wednesday, when all the cheerful red and white striped stalls line
the market square offering you a wide range of purchases. Within the
square is the historic Mote House and the balcony from which William
Gladstone made his first speech. The Town Hall looks out over the
square and is home to the 'Town Treasures' museum, which is open
free of charge to visitors.
A short walk away is Castlegate, where
the ruins of the castle are a prominent landmark. You can walk
around at your leisure or request a tour. If you are interested in
local history, you may choose to take the short walk along
Castlegate into Millgate to visit Millgate Museum with it's wide
range of local artefacts.
The
river runs directly beside the castle and during the summer season
regular river boat trips depart from here. Many of the fine
restaurants and cafés in Newark line Castlegate. In the streets
between the castle and the square you will find a wealth of shops
and cafés and the Buttermarket - a former market housing many small
shops.
If you fancy some exercise, The Grove
Leisure Centre only a few miles from our door offering a wide range
of sports and a swimming pool. Newark has plenty to do in the
evenings, including shows at The Palace Theatre, latest releases at
the new Reel Cinema and ten pin bowling.
