There
cannot be anyone who has not heard of Robin Hood, and we
are situated just half an hour's drive from the Sherwood
Forest Visitor Centre at Edwinstowe, from where you can walk to the
Major Oak - reputedly Robin's hiding place. Whatever the legend,
this area has some of the oldest veteran oak trees alive today and
has a marked walk which takes you through the ancient forest to see
them. Close to the Visitor Centre is the craft Centre at Edwinstowe
- a covered complex where craftsmen are grouped in small units
demonstrating and selling their skills and wares.
If
crafts are your interest, a short drive from Edwinstowe brings you
to Rufford Park, where you can walk
round the picturesque lake or through the woods, study the ruins of
Rufford
Abbey and visit the craft and garden centres. Of course, you can get
a cup of tea or a meal here too!
If you are really the active, outdoors
type, you might enjoy swinging through the trees at
'Go Ape' at Sherwood Pines. You can
take a leisurely walk, hire a bicycle, or for the really
adventurous, try the high rope walks and tree to tree zip wires.
This needs to be pre-booked, but is open all year.
